Fibber Is Drafted
Originally Aired: March 18, 1941
Fibber McGee & Molly #279, "Fibber Is Drafted,"
When the mailman arrives at 79 Wistful Vista, Fibber receives an unexpected letter from the U.S. government ordering him to report for induction into the Army. Despite being overage with flat feet, bad eyesight, and carrying an extra twenty pounds, Fibber insists he legitimately registered for the draft weeks ago and passed his physical examination. Molly is stunned and skeptical about the whole situation, struggling to believe her husband could actually be called to serve. The news seems impossible, yet the official letter from the President appears genuine.
As word spreads, neighbor Abigail Uppington drops by and finds the entire situation absolutely hilarious, unable to picture the portly, middle-aged Fibber as part of Uncle Sam's fighting forces. Her fits of laughter only fuel Fibber's determination to prove he's really been drafted. With orders to report to the station at five o'clock the following morning, Fibber begins preparing for his sudden departure while Molly grapples with the reality of becoming a war bride again.
