The Football Ringer

Originally aired November 15, 1937, this episode finds Fibber McGee stepping up to deliver a motivational speech at the local college pep rally—with Molly away visiting her Aunt Sarah. As always, Fibber’s embellishments run wild, recounting his days as “Pigskin McGee,” the powerhouse of the gridiron. But when the school’s star player Butch Dromsky is deemed academically ineligible due to a history test, Fibber concocts a scheme to impersonate him for the exam—taking advantage of a nearly blind professor.

From hilariously mangled history answers to a climactic football game where Fibber, mistakenly suited up as Butch, fumbles and rumbles his way to a game-winning touchdown (with pants literally falling off), the episode delivers peak physical comedy and wordplay. Johnson’s Wax and Glow Coat ads are woven throughout, and the show is remastered for clarity—offering classic Fibber McGee & Molly hijinks in top form.
